The Mainland and Macao strengthen cooperation in veterinary medicine

On September 4, 2013, Zhang Zhongqiu, Director General of the Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, held talks with Chen Limin, Director General of the Department of Administrative Law and Administration of the Macao Special Administrative Region in Beijing. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on the prevention and control of animal diseases, food safety of animal origin and management of licensed veterinarians, and signed the minutes of the meeting.

The two sides agreed to establish a direct dialogue mechanism between veterinary management bodies, timely report animal epidemics and major food safety of animal origin, list avian influenza and rabies as key animal diseases for joint prevention and control, jointly carry out laboratory technology research cooperation, and exchange measures for animal disease prevention and control. Carry out epidemiological investigation, risk analysis and assessment activities. The two sides exchanged views on the participation of Macao residents in the veterinary licensing examination and the practice of veterinary medicine in the Mainland. The Ministry of Agriculture will facilitate Macao residents, especially Macao residents graduating from veterinary schools in the Mainland to participate in the examination in a timely manner.

In recent years, the mainland and Macao have had close cooperation and smooth exchanges in the field of veterinary medicine, which has played a positive role in promoting the development of veterinary medicine in the two places. The talks will further deepen exchanges and cooperation in the field of veterinary medicine between the mainland and Macao, jointly improve the prevention and control capacity of cross-border animal diseases, and improve the level of animal health and safety of the two places.

Officials from The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Bureau of Veterinary Medicine of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Administrative Law and the General Administration of Civil Affairs of the Macao Special Administrative Region attended the talks.
